Couples Therapy

Who is couples therapy for?

This is for couples who are ready to come together to pursue their unique therapeutic goals. The most common goals relate to improving communication, strengthening connection, and repairing past hurt in order to move forward. I provide a safe and neutral environment to support couples in being open with each other and with themselves. Oftentimes, a couple may not begin counseling until they are both already feeling burnt out from their relationship. By the time they come in, they may be feeling disheartened, and uncertain of how they could move forward. Even if you are in this position, I encourage you to reach out. As long as you both are dedicated to strengthening your relationship, you can get something valuable out of counseling. If you are ready to get to the core of your relationship challenges, this is for you.

What does a session look like?

A session is typically 50-minutes long (though extended sessions can be an option). During the session I will utilize different types of therapeutic interventions tailored to your unique needs. For couples work, I often utilize the Gottman method or Cognitive-behavioral focused couples therapy. With the Gottman method, we explore conflict triggers and strategies for managing this with constructive communication, and strengthen the foundation of your relationship by rediscovering friendship through increased closeness and intimacy. With a cognitive-behavioral approach, we work together to explore your core beliefs and their influence on your perceptions and behavior, challenge negative assumptions, and practice collaborative problem solving. You will learn about different tools that could benefit you, which I will encourage you to practice applying outside of session. While the therapy session itself is vital, the majority of your therapeutic work will occur outside of session.
