Group Therapy
Who is group therapy for?
Groups are an excellent opportunity for individuals to gain therapeutic support alongside others with similar goals. If you are interested in trying out therapy, but aren't sure if you're ready to fully dive into individual treatment, group therapy could be a good starting point. Group therapy may also serve as a useful supplement to individual therapy, depending on a person's treatment goals. Group therapy can be very affirming for people because it presents them with the opportunity to connect with other individual's having a similar experience. Groups are tailored to specific areas of focus, such as anxiety, emotional regulation, empowerment, grief, social skills, etc., and to specific populations, such as teenagers or adult women, etc.
What does a session look like?
A session ranges from 60 to 90-minutes long, depending on the content and number of group members. Groups usually include between three and six participants. The group and may include things like psychoeducation, skill-building, or peer support, and everyone will be given the opportunity to contribute to discussion. This is an interactive process. During the session I will utilize different types of therapeutic interventions tailored to the group's focus. I have an integrative approach, and may incorporate elements of cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, somatic therapy, solution-focused therapy, compassion-focused therapy, and others to support you in exploring your experience, reflect on the here-and-now, and consider how to move forward. You may learn about different tools that could benefit you, which I will encourage you to practice applying outside of session. While the therapy session itself is vital, the majority of your therapeutic work will occur outside of session.
